More Poor Holding

Last weekend, The Hobbit finale yet again failed to show any stability in its front-loaded box office run. It fell 46% to $0.41 million over the three day frame and $0.5 million over the four days. It has so far earned $253.8 million. This weekend it will make make no more than $200,000. BOTFA is now poised to close with $255 million.

Almost $700 internationally

International

After earning $3.9 million this weekend, The Hobbit finale's international total stands at a massive $697 million. It's earnings in China stand at an incredible $122 million, which is massively higher than Smaug's $77 million and Jouney's $50 million.

BOTFA's international grosses are particularly impressive when considering the devaluation of most currencies around the world. For example, in Russia it is the highest earning Hobbit movie in local currency, but is by far the lowest grossing when converted into US dollars. If BOTFA didn't have to go through this problem, it would've passed An Unexpected Jouney's $714 million already.

It's worldwide total stands just $10 million away from Smaug's $960 million. It may yet scrape past that mark, though it won't by much.

$0.5 million weekend forecast

The Hobbit finale's domestic total currently stands at $253.2 million. It's should earn at least $500,000 this weekend and up to $650,000 over the four day weekend. By the end of its run, it should've passed $256 million.

Respectable Hold

In its 8th weekend, The Battle Of The Five Armies fell a respectable 41% to $762,000. This decline is slightly smaller than previous Hobbit movies (43% & 44%), but much larger than LOTR movies at the same point. This weekend's hold is solid considering the release of new fantasy film Seventh Son, and the fact that BOTFA lost almost half its theatres this weekend, yet it achieved a higher per-theatre average than last weekend.  It's earned almost $253 million and it remains on track to earn over $256 million by the end of its run.

$1.75 million in 7th week

The Hobbit finale's earnings in its 7th week have come to $1.75 million. That's down a sharp 52% from the previous week. There's no chance that it it'll stabilise this weekend, as it faces direct competition from new fantasy movie Seventh Son. Expect a weekend gross of about $0.65 million. Its total currently stands at $252.2 million and it should have earned about $256 million by the end of its run.

No chance topping Smaug

Any chance that The Battle Of The Five Armies would eventually pass the $258 domestic total of The Desolation Of Dmaug, was obliterated as in its 7th frame it fell 53% to $1.29 million. To have had any chance of passing Smaug's total, BOTFA would needed to have earned at least $1.7 million this weekend.

The Hobbit finale has so far earned $251.7 million and will finish its run between $255 million and $257 million.

International

This weekends domestic blip however, means nothing in the bigger picture, as a strong second weekend in China took The Hobbit's international total to $664 million. Add in its domestic gross, and it has earned a staggering $916 million worldwide. It probably won't pass $1 billion but it may pass Smaug's $960 million total.

Solid Wednesday hold

The Hobbit decreased just 19% from Tuesday to earn $0.206 million on Wednesday. This is a good hold amongst wide releases and was better than The Desolation Of Smaug's 25% daily decline at the same point. It was down a solid 37% from last Wednesday which is in line with Smaug's 35% weekly decline and better than An Unexpected Jouney's 46% drop.

The big test though, will come on Friday where it should aim for a gross between $0.4 million and $0.5 million, which would put it on track for a weekend between $1.7 million and $2.15 million.
